We know to expect wrinkles as we grow older, but most of the battle has nothing to do with age. By following these ten tips from the experts NuWave Medical, PLLC, you can keep your skin looking young and healthy for years to come.

1. Protect yourself from the sun.

Sun damage is the leading cause of wrinkles, not to mention skin cancer. If you must spend extended periods of time in the sunlight, make sure to generously apply a nontoxic sunscreen.

2. Drink plenty of water.

Good skin starts from the inside. Water not only rids your body of toxins, but well-hydrated skin looks plump and full. Aim for eight glasses each day, and even more if you work out.

3. Stop smoking cigarettes.

Add wrinkles to your list of reasons to stop smoking. Studies have found that cigarette smoke causes the body to release an enzyme which breaks down the connective tissue in your skin, causing it to sag.

4. Moisturize regularly.

A little bit of moisturizer can go a long way towards concealing the lines and creases on your face. Coconut and olive oils are effective, all natural moisturizers.

5. Eat more antioxidants.

Antioxidants are minerals which neutralize free radicals (molecules which can damage cells). Vitamins A, C, D, and E are all examples of antioxidants that are good for your skin. Good sources of antioxidants include most fruits, vegetables, and green tea.

6. Get an adequate amount of sleep.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body produces excess cortisol, a hormone which can break down skin cells. Aim for eight to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.

7. Reduce the stress in your life.

Stress can actually thin out your skin and weaken it so it can’t fight off wrinkles. Reduce the stress in your life with meditation, relaxation, or a nice day at the spa.

8. Add salmon to your diet.

Salmon is an excellent source of protein and, more importantly for your skin, omega-3 fatty acids. If you aren’t a fan of seafood, fish oil pills also provide these essential fats in capsule form.

9. Make a natural wrinkle-fighting mask.

Don’t waste your money on a store-bought wrinkle mask, which may or may not contain toxins. Instead, mix ½ avocado, ½ banana, and one egg yolk until it forms a paste. Apply to your face for 15 minutes each week and gently wash off with warm water.
