Feeling tired? Try these tips before you reach for another cup of coffee…
Get More Sleep
The most effective way to improve your energy levels is by improving the quantity, or quality, of your sleep. You should aim to get eight to nine hours of rest each night, but if you spend that time tossing and turning, it’s unlikely you will wake up feeling refreshed. Here’s a few tips for better sleep:
- Keep a consistent sleeping schedule throughout the week, including weekends.
- Don’t consume caffeine after noon.
- Limit your exposure to artificial light in the hours leading up to bed.
- Don’t watch TV (or do anything besides sleep) in bed. Your brain will begin to associate your bed with these other activities.
- Use a fan or white noise machine to drown out surrounding sound.
It sounds counterintuitive, but exercising while you are feeling sluggish can actually increase your energy levels. Something as simple as a ten-minute walk can circulate oxygen throughout your body and cause your brain to release energy-boosting hormones. Plus, you’ll sleep better at night.
Scratch Simple Carbs
Carbohydrates are our body’s main source of energy, but eating the wrong types of carbs can leave you feeling tired and lethargic. What’s the wrong type of carb? Simple sugars, such as those found in soda, juices, candy, and processed foods. Avoid the “crash and burn” effect by opting for whole-grain, low-glycemic carbs that take the body longer to digest.
One of the first signs of dehydration is fatigue. Since our bodies are made up primarily of water, even a small drop in H2O levels can affect your energy. How much water is enough? Take your weight (in pounds) and divide by two – that’s how many ounces you should aim to drink each day.
